Elise Boulding: A Pioneer in Peace Research, Peacemaking, Feminism and the Family

Springer Publishing has released four edited volumes on the life work of Elise Boulding. Edited by her son, J. Russell Boulding, these volumes honor the lifetime achievement of the distinguished activist and scholar on the occasion of what would be her 96th birthday (1920-2010). Known as the “matriarch” of the twentieth century peace research movement, she made significant contributions in the fields of peace education, future studies, feminism, and sociology of the family, as well as serving as a prominent leader in the peace movement and the Society of Friends.

Addressing Fragility—A New Learning Agenda

The Fragility Study Group is an independent, non-partisan, effort of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the Center for a New American Security and the United States Institute of Peace. The goal of this brief is to describe what is needed to develop and implement a more robust and effective learning agenda focused on addressing fragility that effectively informs policy decisions.

“Columba-Hypatia: Astronomy for Peace” pilot project launch

The Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR) and the Home for Cooperation (H4C) in collaboration with the science education initiative GalileoMobile successfully launched the “Columba-Hypatia: Astronomy for Peace” project last week at the ‘Home for Cooperation’. The goal of the project is to both inspire an interest in science and the cosmos, and to also promote interaction, understanding and eventually a Culture of Peace. Understanding our planet’s place in the wider universe through the lens of modern astrophysics provides us with a worldview in which we can appreciate our similarities rather than focus on our differences. Therefore, the fun and educational astronomy activities and workshops successfully enabled the participants to reach a collective understanding of these ideas.

Connecting peace research, action, and education in Colombia

From September 7-9, 2016, the University of Cartagena’s Observatory for the Study of Displacement, Conflict, and Peacebuilding hosted the first annual International Forum on Peace Studies. The conference offered an unparalleled opportunity for critical analysis and collective reflection on the implications of the recently announced peace agreement between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), which marks a political end to nearly 60 years of internal armed conflict. For the participants that gathered, the conference offered a space to not only identify the current demands that this historic moment presents for the field of peace studies, but also a space to recognize the impact that civil society has had in their decades-long work for peace that made this agreement possible.
