During the Tigray war in Northern Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Teachers Association (ETA) condemned the damage and disruption inflicted on students, teachers and the education system. They called on relevant public authorities to put an immediate halt to the armed conflict, and highlighted the role of peace education in bringing about peaceful societies.
The Science and Higher Education Ministry of Ethiopia and UNESCO have signed an agreement to facilitate peace education in universities focused on fostering conflict resolution mechanisms, preventing conflicts, and enhancing the quality of education.
The Government of Japan has signed a project agreement that provides 500,000 USD to promote peace education in Ethiopia and the rest of Africa. About 5,000 teachers in 26 countries will be trained in transformative pedagogy for peace education.
UNESCO Liaison Office to ECA and AUC in Addis Ababa took part in the African Union Peace and Security Council Open Session under the theme: “Living Together in Peace” on 5 November 2019. Peacebuilding is at the heart of UNESCO’s mission that it promotes through education.
“Unless peaceful thinking is entrenched as the culture in this country, we cannot think of development. In so doing, every one of us needs to be actively engaged in the conscious development of peaceful thinking.”
This study examines to what extent peace education could be effective in transforming and shifting the violent behavior of the youth towards a culture of peace non-violent conflict resolution in Ethiopia.
