Report of the World Interfaith Harmony Week at Miriam College (Philippines)

Last 03-08 February 2020, the Miriam College community celebrated the annual World Interfaith Harmony Week (WIHW). The activities during this week were led by the Center for Peace Education-Miriam College (CPE). The first activity was a public forum entitled, “Interfaith Solidarity and Updates on the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.” It was held at the Environmental Studies Institute on 03 February 2020 and was attended by students and teachers from partner schools Miriam College and Raja Muda National High School (RMNHS). The guest speaker in the forum was Atty. Maisara Dandamun-Latiph, one of the members of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority. Atty. Maisara spoke about celebrating the beauty of diversity and how people must unite despite their differences through showing love, respect, compassion and inclusivity. In the afternoon, selected Miriam students and the students from RMNHS participated in team-building activities followed by a Conflict Resolution Skills workshop by Ms. Melinda Lamorena, CPE Senior Associate.

The next day began with a workshop on Managing Stress facilitated by Dr. Gail Reyes-Galang, CPE Associate Director. It was followed by a session on “Encouraging Other Youth to be Peacebuilders: Youth Peacebuilding tools” facilitated by Sophia Dianne C. Garcia, CPE Advocacy Officer. After the workshop sessions, the participants were given the time to share the activities of their respective clubs. The third day was allotted for a fieldtrip in historical Intramuros located in the City of Manila.

Truly, the WIHW celebration in Miriam College has been a meaningful one because it became an opportunity for the participants, both Muslims and Christians, to learn from one another and continue to build bridges of understanding.
