IIPE México: International Institute on Peace Education 2022

July 24 - August 1

The 2022 International Institute for Peace Education (IIPE) will be held in Mexico City from July 24 to August 1, 2022.  IIPE Mexico is co-organized by the IIPE Secretariat in partnership with Colectivo Tomate and a network of former IIPE participants and hosts from across Mexico and the Americas.  IIPE 2022 will be held at Casa Xitla, Mexico’s only non-profit center dedicated to peace, human rights, the arts, spirituality, and environmental sustainability.

IIPE Mexico will convene 60 educators from around the world for a week-long, residential, learning community experience in peace education. A rich exchange of peacebuilding research, academic theory, best practices, and actions will be shared.

IIPE Mexico will explore the theme of “Weaving Together Intercultural Peacelearning.” This theme frames a shared inquiry for pursuing the possibilities of intercultural peacelearning and community building, and of embracing a plurality of forms of knowledge,  to address present-day global challenges as well as their local manifestations. Participants, including community leaders, educators, researchers, artists and activists will inquire together into transformative practices for fostering constructive interconnectedness and interdependence that engage the balance of thinking-feeling, cognitive-emotional, “sentipensar” processes.

IIPE 2022 will also give special emphasis to the experience of Mexico.  Given that Mexico has suffered structural, cultural, and direct violence for centuries, we state two broad questions: 1) What can peace education contribute to understanding and framing the global and local/indigenous variety of knowledges in Mexico? And, 2) How can peacelearning be fostered in different cultural, social, historical, and economical contexts? IIPE Mexico aims to offer opportunities for interactive learning through listening, acknowledging, and engaging in dialogue among voices of local and indigenous communities in Mexico and also from other regions worldwide.

About the International Institute on Peace Education

The International Institute on Peace Education is a weeklong residential experience for educators and scholars hosted in a different country every other summer. The Institute facilitates exchanges of theory and practical experiences in teaching peace education and serves to grow the field. In serving the field, the IIPE operates as an applied peace education laboratory that provides a space for pedagogical experimentation; cooperative, deep inquiry into shared issues; and advancing theoretical, practical and pedagogical applications. Since its inauguration at Teachers College Columbia University in 1982, the IIPE has been hosted in 18 different countries, bringing together thousands of experienced and aspiring educators, academics, professional workers, and activists in the field of peace education from around the world to exchange knowledge and experiences and learn with and from each other in its intensive residentially based learning community.  The objectives of each particular institute are rooted in the needs and transformational concerns of the co-sponsoring host partner(s), their local community, and the surrounding region.
